AS MY ANONYMOUS NAME SAYS WE ARE SHAFTED. I DO OT HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE AND WILL NEVER HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE. MANY OF US WHO COMMENT ANONYMOUSLY DUE SO FOR OUR OWN REASONS. WHAT SHOULD MATTER TO THIS PAPER AND OTHERS IS UNLESS THEY DECIDE TO BE THE VOICE OF THE COMMUNITY AND EXPPRESS THE OPINIONS OF THE COMMUNITY ITS TIME THEY SHUT DOWN. GOODBYE StrongEmphasis
As a parent I do not depend on the public schools or any government agency to teach religion to my children. Teaching religion is the parent’s job that being said take your child to church. Eastridge Community Church holds services every Sunday at Alcovy High.
I am getting tired of the complaining about the tax rollback without any suggestions on how to fix the problem, so here is mine
On the recycling centers, close them. Many times I pass these centers and nobody is using them. Have a weekly recycling day and curbside pickup. With curbside pickup you don’t have to worry about someone from another county using this service.
Have all non essential government jobs changed to half days on Wednesday. A friend of mine says jasper county does this and has always done this.
If a residence or business has a alarm system after the third false alarm for the year charge a fine. This includes alarms from the schools.
The sheriffs office could start taking reports online. I have checked other jurisdiction do this for non violent offenses.
The tax assessor could go after property owners not paying their taxes ( banks with foreclosed properties).
Do not blame the current county commisioners until you look at the mistakes made in the past. Its hard for the county to have increased tax revenue through bussiness when the past commisioners have allowed the various cities to annex property just for commercial space. Therefore the cities get the revenue not the county. A good example is the Dollar General and lawn mower bussiness on 36. Between the bypass and that property everything is considered in the county, but those two are city.
I went to the county tax assessors web site to see if they listed delinquent property taxes and who is responsible for paying them. The information is not listed. How many vacant and occupied properties are behind in taxes. I think this information should be posted so that those of us who do pay their taxes know who is not. Also if these back taxes were collected would we still need a tax increase ? Can the Newton Citizen get this information and post it?
I agree and disagree with you I have a neighbor who is a dispatcher and she has told me some of the problems public safety faces. Law enforcement respond daily to false alarms many from the same residences, business’s and public school's. We have a county ordinance for false alarms why isn’t it enforced. The fines could pay for fuel and maintenance. EMS is dispatched to sore teeth, feat and fevers problems that are not emergency’s and waste tax payer money As for the commissioner and manager get rid of one.
Are you volunteering to go into a burning house, respond to a crime in progress or maintain our roads. Obviously you take these men and women for granted.
What I want to know is what are the county commissioners doing to keep our current county employees. Its simple to say if you don’t like your working conditions, salary or benefits just move on. Its not that government employees should be treated better, its common sense. Firefighters and law enforcement are trained at our expense. They are required to receive additional training annually. Some of them receive specialized training again at our expense. Newton County has trained and lost a lot of good people all due to financial issues. It is my understanding county employees do not receive overtime for working over. In the case of firefighters think about it, sorry your house is burning but its time for me to go home. Or law enforcement sorry you got robbed but I’m going home its the end of my shift. Our public works employee do a excellent job of maintaining our roads. There again training is involved. Wake up Newton County its not that public employees are any better, but we paid to train them lets keep them.
