That is awesome news! I'm so glad to hear of the progress by the YRPC, and also the cooperation of the Porterdale PD in helping make this a great recreational area for the residents! Thanks again!
Ultimately, I think the Yellow River Park and blueway will be a great addition to our community. I am an avid kayaker and resident of Porterdale, and have paddled several areas of the Yellow River along the Newton/Rockdale corridor. There are some very beautiful stretches of this river that can only be seen by boat, and I think further development of this park will also encourage the preservation of this beautiful river. My primary concern, however, will be the security of the park and it's visitors. I have walked the nature trail several times this past year, and have seen sleeping bags, clothing, and tarps just off the trail, which appear to be evidence of homeless persons living in the woods. I have also witnessed local residents riding 4-wheelers and go-karts on the concrete trail and the nature trail. I'm certain the park was not designed for these activities, and I would like to see both Porterdale and Newton County step up enforcement of the rules and security of park visitors, whether by signage, limiting access to motorized vehicles with fencing, or perhaps increasing police patrols in the area until the problem is resolved. All in all, I think it's a great idea, and I am highly in favor of the further development of the park!
