To the retirees who moved here seven years ago, you are absolutely correct. The Covington Police Department has no accountability. They know that their chief will protect his guys - no matter what. What incenitve do they have to do thier jobs honorably and professionally if they can get away with the bare minimum?
That's funny since the folks at the Department of Labor have advised locals to dumb down their education and experience on their resumes if they want to work locally.
From the article, I read the accident is "believed to be alcohol related." Before everyone assumes the 17 year old is guilty of drunk driving, why don't we wait until the results are confirmed. This assuming guilt without getting all the facts is not helping the situation. And to all those bashing the family for not knowing where their 17 year old is or not approving of her being out at 2:30 in the morning, it's comforting to know YOU never did anything your family wouldn't approve of when you were young. We're all human, people. We all make mistakes. This is a very sad and unfortunate situation and our thoughts and prayers need to be with ALL those affected.
I have a question for those who complain about "greedy builders" runining the landscape of our community: why is the person who SOLD the land to the developer/builder never called "greedy?" If they would either not put their land up for sale or refuse the offer made by a developer, the land would remain pristine and undeveloped. Former Commissioner Ronnie Dimsdale made a tidy profit off selling his land to Wal-Mart, just saying.
Come election time Commissioners Henderson and Fleming, along with their ring leader Ewing, need to be told by the citizens of Newton County that we will not stand for this type of behavior. And the pompas county attorney needs to be sent packing, too. What a disgrace.
I hear the video was released by the Covington Police to all media outlets - thank you for not stooping to the level as the "other" paper in Covington and posting it on your website.
LtMike you've got to be kidding! The "honest" Covington Police Department is full of crooked and bad cops that don't know how to successfully investigate cases. How about the Citizen doing a story on the number of unsolved cases the CPD?
Maybe our award winning police department is not very adept at investigating crimes and following all the leads before they arrest someone. Sandy said the day of the incident and all throughout this process that J C did not strike her...what more do you need to dismiss charges? I wonder how much of our tax dollars were wasted on this during the last two years.
From what I learned about Main Street Programs many years ago, DCA established them to promtoe the downtown areas of communiites and encourage revitalization. The new scope of work that the City of Covington has for our Main Street Program does not fall under those parameters and might jeporidze our program. It seems that the director of the Main Street program is so busy working on other projects, along with the Mayor, that the businesses on the square can't recall the last time they've seen her on the square.

Sounds like some one got to Whatley, as just a few days ago he was not pleased with any of the three finalists.
