WHY DID EDDIE JOHNSON VOTE NO ON THE SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT?
@Teacherman - I have never understood that with all of the shame the past principal put on Alcovy High not one education reporter took the time to issue an open records request on the NCSS HR department requesting evidence to support the outrageous turnover at that school. It is public record who leaves and if you look alone at assistant principals and counselors and grad coach and secretarial, bookkeeper, teacher alone the school lost tremendous teacher and employee talent the last three years and it was simply allowed to happen. That is what makes me a little cautious of wanting anyone in the county to be our next superintendent. No one stood up for kids in this mess they just all let it happen. I challenge the Newton Citizen to do a story on employee turnover at Alcovy High School from 2009 - 2013, issue the report and let us decide. Do the whole county if you want to show comparisons.
Piedmont Academy just earned accreditation. Woodlee's is advertising all over. Peachtree Christian is growing. Providence is growing. I say awesome news please continue to grow and take over our public system that wastes money, hires bad, offers a SPLOST with completely false language about an urgent necessity for a new high school after doing a "canvas" and just wait you people if they hire a new superintendent with less credentials than Matthews you investigate and you will find there is one thing that matters to most of these board members and it is not quality or strong leadership. It is the reason we are in this mess.
What did the school board "chair" forget to tell you? Oh um yes we are two years away from a three million dollar red ink line. YOu voters fall for it every single time. More money to public schools = less money for classrooms and more money for fat cats and oversized buildings. U.N.R.E.A.L.
Now that is a good one @OnToday the aunt story I had forgotten that one. I don't think it matters who lives where to this current school board the majority of them. They overlooked a white male Republican and that spoke volumes to me when they cycled to the current chair. That was a clear message that they do not want white males in education and surely not Republican ones because they know school choice is coming since public schools have failed so many lives. I think you can pretty much write NCSS off at this point especially if they hire someone who fits this pattern. This is what happens when voters fail to do their jobs last November. I would never be proud of being a longtime school board member in Newton County because in saying so I just admitted I never stopped the THREE MILLION dollar deficits from being 2 years away. We need more private schools and we need tax credits and vouchers to send our kids to them.
You do not have to take anything out of the general fund stop trying to scare teachers. Stop the outgrageous spending every month and save money like we all do at home. How could I manage a family of 3 if I spent out of control and had to ask taxpayers for a penny every five years this is nutso people. Close some schools if you dont need them Fayette County just shut down four schools. Everyone is having to manage budgets and we don't get to put our hands out and stop trying to use safety of children as a way to influenece people this sounds like the lame stream media of CNN all over the map. Stop spending money now on extras I was at a high school on 36 and saw administrators sitting at a lunch table glued to IPADS we paid for out of federal money that is our tax dollar also people. They totally I mean totally ignored kids in the lunchroom.
I can tell you this. Their closed meetings better not stray from the legal 3 topics or I will find out and will file an AG complaint each time. They should not discuss news articles or web comments or columns in closed meetings. They also should not meet in quorums on public matters like Splost.
First of all I don't care all that much what you think because you blow out incorrect facts. Second, I thank the Newton Citizen for creating a forum where we can express ourselves about our schools. I want our schools to do well but trying to pass some crazy SPLOST with language so vague as it is just adds to the mistrust I have in the system and the superintendent. But to your point you can go to the DOE website and the data is not 2012 or even 2013 but the most recent data on Eastside High shows 36% black students and 58% white students and 41% free / reduced lunch students and more than 12% in remedial education and more than 14% in special education - hardly an all-white elite school would you not agree? That is the most recent data and it is 3 years old so I imagine the diversity is even greater now. THe DOE site says it is not a title one school - that shows you how outdated our own DOE site is but EHS is a targeted assistance Title One school due to the high percentages of free and reduced lunch. I care about NCSS and I thank these to men for helping us to understand that stupid SPLOST. And thank them rather than blame them for speaking out. If it fails you can blame the past several years of mistrust and you can take the next year to go back to the draft table and begin again and take a hint - remove the vague language no one has any pennies to give you for projects we dont understand.
Was there truly a quorum present of the school board at the only public forum of their own Splost? Who were they?
Come on folks do you really think Baxter execs will move here when they have Oconee schools, Morgan County low crime, the beauty and peace of Putnam County - all 30 to 40 minutes from Stanton Springs. I mean look at the crime and the litter in Newton County. In some parts it looks third world. Smoking bans like Nazis. City council is a shambles. The new mayor is a disappointment. The school board stinks worse than those skunks on 36. The NSP disaster and a BOC member who reported to jail regularly last year. A Chamber president who acts like he is two. Come on.
