The comments on this article has gotten away from the title "Newton Schools Expect $1.5 million extra for budget". This article is very strange to me. It begins with positive signs of things beginning to look up. It begins to slide down hill a little when they begin discussing teacher's furloughs. Teachers got furloughed again 6 days this year. I work for NCSS. The decision to furlough teachers is easily offered by NCSS county administrators because it is a win/win for the county office. You see they cut us 6 days BUT we get letters from our administrators that say our rooms need to be READY by our FIRST preplanning day because the county schedules so many meetings that are mandatory for us to attend. It is near impossible to have a room ready for open house in only 3 days. That means I work without any pay AND I will. Why? Because I still love teaching. I will because I want everything to be ready for my students when they come for open house. They know this. They know they can cut 6 days to save money and get the same amount work from employees for free. They know! It is a win/win for them. Then the article really hits bottom because now, even with the GOOD news of $1.5m, it is recommended they begin looking at what needs to be cut from the budget. More furlough days? That's easy. No step raises! I can't remember the last year that even happened. What a good feeling when I started reading this article about the improving funds to the schools system only to be sucker punched in the end. Oh and as a final note why are students leaving Newton County Schools. REALLY? We must get discipline under control in all schools so the teachers can teach and those that want to learn have that opportunity again. AHS is NOT the only problem maybe just the worst.

Imjustsayin....I don't even know how to respond to your "logic". Let's summarize..First JC himself is arrested and charged with battery. Now there is an example for his 5 sons to follow. Then his son is arrest ONE time for aggravated stalking and just a little of a year later he is arrest AGAIN for making terroristic threats. How does JC handle this? He decides the system let his son down, not that his son did something wrong. TERRORISTIC THREATS. They should have provided services to help him do better. MAN that's JC's job! So what does he do. This is where it all goes the wrong direction. He decides rather than encouraging his son to suffer the consequences of his action as the law requires like a man and put his life in order... he will just go to jail to protest mistreatment of his son. As a father and an elected public official, he made a conscious decision to break the law. That's where he disgraced his son, himself, and his elected office. Now that's really going to help his son learn right from wrong. Our schools are "providing services" every day to children just like JC Henderson's. Children that are taught by their parents if you don’t want to do what your teacher asks of you just refuse. Wouldn't it have been wiser to teach him how to make better decisions or try to change the system in the proper way. Did that ever cross his mind? What does this have to do with his commissioner job. EVERYTHING. This man has proven over the last 3 years that he makes poor decisions. He is not going to make that many poor decisions at home and then go to his commissioner job and become the seat of wisdom. Nobody is that amazing.

Oh my goodness. We have a commissioner deciding he disagrees with the law so he just won't follow it. Just down the street, we have school board chairman holding illegal meetings to try to railroad one of their own. This county is in such big trouble. We need law abiding leaders elected to serve the people of Newton County.
