mansfield 1 year, 3 months ago on County Manager: RIF could be required if millage maintained

What this newspaper didn't tell you is that "rollback" is government double talk for raising your property taxes. While it sounds like a tax cut, rollback is a tax hike hidden in sweet language. The only thing being rolled back is the amount of money we can keep in our paychecks.

I hope the Mitcham's farm didn't tip over during Johnson's visit.

Its funny (not really) to hear this talk about a "roll back" tax hike. That's like saying something is up and down at the same time......impossible. Raising the millage rate is not rolling back anything, its simply taking more money from those who earned it and should have the right to spend it as they please. The citizens of this county don't have the opportunity to just take more money from their employment when times get tight, only government can do that. NO tax hike, regardless of what fancy name you give it.

mansfield 1 year, 4 months ago on Firearms ordinance approved

Let's see how many shootings in the Silos subdivision are stopped by this ordinance. So far, it seems like not a single 2am birthday party shooting, drive by shooting or any other shooting has been stopped. Shame on that gang of 4 commissioners for not pinpointing the problems and dealing with them but rather burdening the whole county with a nonsense solution because some areas can't/won't obey the laws.

Raising property taxes? "If we do that they ought to run us all out of town." Well said! Finally, an elected official who sticks to his pledges.

mansfield 1 year, 4 months ago on Newton Sheriff's Office looks into shooting; missing teen

Hold the presses! Why didn't the current gun law in Newton County stop this shooting? Better yet, would the Sheriff's new law have stopped it? Not a chance. This most recent shooting in West Newton just goes to show the waste of time and money to write a new law that won't mean a bit of difference in the way people act when they don't care about the law in the first place. Stricter gun control laws have not decreased crime anywhere in this country and won't in Newton County.

I'm ready to go for a go kart ride, we have no family activities in this county after hours. Put it in a place that won't intrude on others, let them go and start collecting the property and sale taxes. Its not rocket science.

Newtownqq, this county just had an election with a 3.3% turnout. Does that satisfy you? What's crazy is your snipping and whinning every time any commissioner tries to make some progress and bring some needed change to Newton County. Does Congress go door to door? No and they have a 9% approval rating. I say bravo to this initiative and I hope to see more. When the county commission meets in your neighborhood, stay home if you cant add to the solution rather than the problem.

mansfield 1 year, 6 months ago on Citizens group abandons 350 yard shooting limitation

The Sheriff overstepped on this issue. The people and one or two commissioners have let it be known this was not the time or place to do a blanket ordinance that would not solve the problem or even stop one person from breaking the current law. If someone is breaking the law, prosecute them and leave the rest of us alone!
