djwalden 2 years, 9 months ago on Mayor, homeless shelter supporters meet

We have a community and community leaders who believe that the Garden of Gethsemene Homeless Shelter needs to exist to serve those who are in need of temporary shelter. Pastor Lett founded this shelter, and had done her best to serve all of those who come seeking help.

I have first hand knowledge that the work at the shelter is well managed and essential to the community. Mayor Johnston and former Mayor Ramsey are men who understand the importance of both the shelter and the support behind it. But in order for this shelter to thrive and be sustainable, it needs an active board that meets regularly to make decisions for the shelter's (and it's residents') best interests. Let's not blame the messengers for the difficult, yet realistic decisions that have to be made.

djwalden 3 years, 4 months ago on Horton wins regional honor

Steve Horton is a man of character and a great example of how we ALL should conduct ourselves in business and in life. He knows how to examine issues with respect to the needs of the people and the laws of the city, and he also knows how to bring people of differing opinions together to create consensus on difficult issues. We have been blessed to have Mr. Horton serve our community in so many capacities over the past 35 years.

The next time that you see Steve Horton out and about, please take a moment to thank him for his tireless efforts to make this place that we love, an even better place to live.

God bless you Steve Horton.

djwalden 3 years, 6 months ago on Newton school board holds apparent illegal meeting

Mr. Meadors continues to be one of the most thoughtful and vocal proponent of our children, their schools, and our teachers. Having read all of his columns, I cannot find a single instance in which he discredited the NCSS, shared confidential information, or personally attacked anyone. This meeting should have never been held.

That said, let's not throw Mr. Campbell under the bus for this incident. He was hired by the BOE to act as its attorney; to advise on legal matters and to handle litigation. He doesn't set policy, nor does he call meetings like this. He serves at the pleasure of the BOE. When the Board Chair calls him into a meeting like this, it is his job to attend. Period. Put the blame for this unfortunate incident where it belongs. Mr. Johnson alone bears the responsibility for calling this meeting.
