Agree with most of the comments above. When my grandson questioned the need for these cameras in the ESPLOST debate Stone didn't even want to let him speak. As I said then plenty of money going to the school system but not being used for the right purposes. Now we have replaced two schools but the schools replaced still standing and requiring tax dollars to keep up and maintain. Plus we are getting conflicting stores as to whether there is money in the budget to tear them down. Seem there is very poor communication in Newton's school system. I still say SPLOST should be revamped so it can be used to hire and maintain good teachers because this is where the schools will improve, not with new buildings. Heck I made all A's in high school being taught in a doublewide trailer.
Go for it young lady. It can't hurt.
You're right on it John. By the time Baxter get's up and running no telling what the unemployment rate will be. To many people think this will be a Newton Company hiring Newton Citizens but this will be an area company and the hires from Newton will be minimum for reasons John mentions. The employment from Newton will never match up to the percentage of giveaways from Newton's taxpayers. Looks like the experts from Newton that were involved in these Newton incentives could at least gotten some promise of hire numbers coming from Newton.
Going over 100,000 population got us a tax increase but now those responsibility for raising budget requests and voting for the tax increase are themselves getting a raise which will lead to need of more tax in 2014 to cover these raises.
Sorry I don't see no silver lining in 10.3 percent reported unemployment in Newton County.
No raise to any tax hikers or other elected officials that increased their budget requests causing the tax increase. And just why hasn't the county responded to an ORR? The county attorney office leading the investigating on who gets a raise. The chairman stated to us in his chat that the county attorney makes $195 a hour for any work done for the county. His charges will probably be more than the total combined raises.
Losing 3 gaining 2 is what I call going out the world backwards. They should be looking at the reason the 3 failed before the 2 coming in fail as well. The chamber is using the taxpayers funds going after high ends jobs that will not come to Newton anymore with high tax and very low per capti income. The walmart, dollar stores, and McDonalds etc will come without a chamber or incentives because low income is their base.
If ANY elected official in this county takes a raise after raising tax for the 100,000 citizens in Newton County they should be run out of town. Go to the commissioner meeting and support Douglas's motion and demand they take no raise.
@Neuhierl- First of all, we gave this board many ways to cut to avoid this tax increase. You must not work for a living by your comments because MANY have reduced wages, less income from this depression called a recession and have had to make ends meet. Up in North Newton we have required very little in road repair and Sheriff Dept. As far as roads I lived on a road claimed by the county for 30 years. Never in those 30 years did they put a dime on that road and never did we go crying for them to do so. I took money out of my pocket to pay for the repairs. I personally don't think ANY subdivision road should be owned or kept up by the county but should be kept up by the builder of the subdivision and tenants. Same with security. If you live in a high crime subdivision you should be responsible for your own security. They can send 7 deputies to a commission to watch over a few protestors then they probably have to much help and money going that way. Also when I go by and see 5 county workers standing around watching one county worker cutting a tree I have no pity for more money going to county workforce. You need to get out and ride around like I do looking at things going on in this county. Spend a little money out of your own pocket on things you need and you wouldn't be as free at taking other folks money.
Newton county is doomed.
