I guess I missed something along the way - newspapers & all citizens of the USA have the right to voice their opinions/beliefs. Me thinks stated opinions are called "freedom of speech" and I believe that is protected, by our Constitution & Bill of Rights that news publications jump behind, each day & everyday. One thing that I learned along the way - no matter the statement there is a thread of truth in it , sometimes it is hard to find - but with ~309 million people in the US of which ~ 100K in Newton county they are all individuals and see things a bit different than the person next to them.
A perfect world can only be found in Utopia - great fictional reading.
Maybe your phrasing could have been more clear. I did read it correctly. First you mentioned the Belk move to Conyers followed by your "the other home town stores" statement. From here, that seems to strongly imply Belk was one of the home town stores. If you meant it differently, maybe should have stated your comment more precisley. Hint: should have left the word "other" out.
Wonder if some ever took a poll on how many readers actually have a Facebook account?
Certainly all 15 penalteis could not have been "bad' calls.
Last time I "visited" Morgan County - gasoline was actually lower in Morgan County than Newton - watch out the flood gates might be opening up soon.
Don't think you can class Belk as a hometown store , read:
"Belk is a department store chain founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, N.C. It is the nation's largest family owned and operated department store company with 301 locations in 16 Southern states."
NC always had a Wal-Mart since I moved here in 1996. Used to go to Conyers to shop for groceries at the Super Wal-Mart & a larger selection of other stuff and go to HD for certain items (I primarily go to the ACE store in Covington unless they don't have the selection or carry the item I need). Now my sales tax dollars stays right here.
NC has a larger population by about 30K than Rockdale but they have a greater number of quality chain businesses.
Earlier this year in March, I did my best to buy a late model pre-owned car from one of the two dealers in Covington, I bought out of town and county and it wasn't in Rockdale. Simple reasons - the car I bought (same make & model) was $3000 (or 20% less,) newer in years (2011 vs 2010) and less miles (35K vs 44K). Before I signed on the dotted line called back to the local dealer and simply asked could they match it - they made zero effort - they made zero from me - Mama raised no fool.
As a side note I do all my banking with a local home grown financial institution adm have for 17 years - the one that says they may not be a bigger bank but they are a better bank & in my opinion they are.
"If you want to fly with the eagles you can't sit around a hoot with the owls."
Sounds like sour grapes from here. But those same refs officated the game for both schools. The last I checked football is classed a violent sport and needs to be controlled to the rules of the game - players in HS do get seriously hurt & worse. The players are students and happen to be althletics so the wishes to "let the boys play" does not apply. HS sports is about building charater, teach team work, time management (balancing time between practices, homework adn a little social life), following rules of the game, fellowship, character building, importance of physical fitness, hard work with BST (blood, sweat & tears) and what it takes to do your best (which is a never ending process). Oh, if a student does well at these and class room studies they MAY have the opportunity to advance to the next station in life.
Maybe the enviornment (less class room disrubtions), quality of instructors & administration added together with respectful students that are motivated to succeed has a whole lot to do with. This motivation starts at the home front not the "society". As I say the best gift one can give themselves is a quality education (HS diploma, college, trade school, etc). Those disruptive HS "friends" will be long gone after HS is over.
Well if NC is not broke I agree with that as long as there are property tax payers in teh county. But there is certainly some very tight budgets due to decreases in property values & less tax revenue. Just a few examples - road maintenace is terrible (great impression for all those tourist visitors we have - weeds 2' high every were in the countly except where they are running new water lines along 278 to Baxter - certain subdivisons have patchwork type road repairs (look like those red rubber tire inner tubes during WWII except rougher, NCSO has two deputies assigned to traffic control (used to have 4 a couple years ago) adn teh C of C only has one - drivers have gone wild (thanks to GSP for stopping a few of these NASCAR wannabees). But there always seems to be money available for certain "ego" driven projects - between the C of C & NC there is money to be spent on - things like 40K for more Christmas light on the Square and keeping the Turner Lake turnaround kept emmaculate. I draw a strong parrallel to that guy Nero who fiddled while Rome was burning.
Here is what the coaach said about Johnson, can find any blame in this statement.
“We have a sophomore quarterback that had never played under the lights,” Banks said. “Once he got hit and settled down I knew everything was going to be OK.”
He was 16/31 fro 222 yards - that is great for any senior quarterback in my view. But 15 penalties might have had a lot more to do wit hteh loss. But the coach showed class in not publically calling out anyone or the team for the loss. Bet there were things said in the locker room and practices should be interesting next week with special emphasis on sportsmanship..
