GSM 1 year, 6 months ago on Newton students below state, nation on SAT

No one measure for any given year determines a school's total performance. That said, Principal Carpenter and her teachers will certainly be examining SAT results to determine where weaknesses can be turned into strengths. (No two senior classes are alike.) Meanwhile, on last year's EOCTs for the state of Georgia, Alcovy enjoyed statistically significant improvement ON EACH OF EIGHT STATE TESTS: +11 in 9th Grade Literature; +6 in American Literature; +16 in Biology; +5 in Physical Science; +3 in U.S. History; +4 in Economics; +16 in Math I; and +18 in Math II. While only the EOCT in Economics in the above list includes last year's SAT test-takers, the broad point is that the school-as-a-whole showed SIGNFICANT academic gains in 2011-12 across the board, across grade levels given our state's required curriculum. This bodes well for the future. And Alcovy teachers, support staff, and administrators deserve our gratitude while working to improve all results including the SAT. Gary S. Mathews, Superintendent, Newton County School System
