Darrell a lot of what you said about the old south was true. I have witheld my views publicly on the Paula Deen situation until I could gather more facts. I give you the credit for causing me to look at the complaint for myself rather than waiting to get it from the news. A google search soon had me reading the 33 page complaint filed with the Chatam county court.(see "Paula Deen Is In Hot Water Y'all: Employment discrimination...") I have only finished the first seventeen pages but that is enough for me to understand why her sponsors are dropping her. I realize that these are only allegations but, they are from a white female former General Manager who served in that position for some five years. Paula's brother Bubba is painted as pretty much out of control, allegedly requiring his afro american employees to come in through the back door for "all purposes" including to pickup their checks and having to use a seperate rest room. He is also painted as a sexual deviant. What I really found to be appalling is that Paula's deragatory statements did not take place twenty or thirty years ago but in this decade. Maybe, just maybe Paula is being judged by the content of what really is in her heart. Sadly, we as a people are still a long ways from "all just being people"
The electorate have shown that they are indifferent, Ignorant or just plain don't care otherwise how else can you explain J.C 's presence on the board. The man has proven that he can't run his own home much less a county Government. I guess he's fulfilled his committment for his weekend stays at the local jail, smh.
All the more reason to require the parents to get them to and from school.
Since we don't cutoff the hands of thieves in this country, please give these worthless individuals 5 years to serve. Get a job McDonalds, Wendy"s, Burger King etc.would be better than breaking into someone's home. This is the type of crime that could easily escalate if someone is found at home or arrives while these fools are inside. It's time to get tough on crime and the criminals.
Haven't agreed with Meadors on much but I do on this issue. It should be the parents responsibility to get their mis-behaving children to and from the school. This might cause them to start parenting because it will become an inconvenience to them. There should be a strict limit on suspensions, when three are reached during a childs school career they should be put out permanently no matter their age and put in a reformatory until they graduate mandatory classes for twelve years. If I have to support their unproductive behinds better in a cage so that children who want to learn will be able to do so. Their parents should be made to pay for their upkeep by taking a portion of their payroll checks or from their welfare assistance. This madness has to stop.
This will be my final comment concerning this because I realize that I don't know it all and I can't presume to speak for any or all law officers. Apparently the troopers you chill out with or more aquaintances than friends because if you got a ticket from one of them for speedng while going with the flow, suggesting that you weren't the only car that could have been ticketed.......and as for your comment that they aren't fond of deputies tells me that you "don't know what you are talking about". Law officers are like a brotherhood and unless a fellow peace officer is blatantly breaking the law or involved in some activity that is extremely dangerous or just stupid they are shown a 'professional courtesy". This isn't automatically extended by all and depending on the officer be it a trooper ,deputy or policeman some of those are given a pass. I don't comment on a lot of articles for various reasons but especially if I have no idea of the subject matter...hint hint. Finally I too have known a few troopers since we had one in the family and I once got a break because I was a class mate in high school of the trooper that stopped me for speeding.
You don't know what you're talking about John, what do you base your uninformed comment on?
Unfortunate but, due to the severity of the infraction plus his excessive speed thus increasing the likely hood of causing an accident This man's career in law enforcement should be over. The trooper should be commended for not looking the other way.
My comments were not meant to attack Mr.Horton whom I too agree seems to be a fine individual, the comments had more to do with the way this city runs things. My comment about Mr. Horton had more to do with, that is in my own mind, the fact that he has attempted to retire from public service on more than one occassion and is asked to come back to either help someone transition into a position or take ove a position on an interim basis. Again I have to ask is there no one who resides within the Covington City limits with the business sense to help lead this city into the future? As for not caring where an individual resides, maybe I am in the minority on this but I do, otherwise we should ask retirees from other counties and states to come in and help us run our city.
Is there something the citizens of Covington aren't being told? I read in the Covington News that the mayor and council have given themselves a raise but I haven't seen anything in this paper about it. Funny thing is the raise was never talked about publicly. Mayor Ronnie Johnston, "who championed a review of Main Street by an outside consultant" is a partner in a business on the square that will be on the receiving end of a revitaliazation grant and now Ms.Kelly is resigning? Inquiring minds want to know. Is Steve Horton the only citizen with the business acumen that is able to guide the city? It seems he is called back every few months to help out in some capacity, Does Steve even live in the city limits? This just doesn't feel right seems like business as usual in Good Old Covington.
