It was Irish dramatist George Bernard Shaw who is credited with originally saying these inspirational words: "Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say 'Why not?'".

TONY ELDER: Remind yourself, others about the Good News of Jesus

Hola, y'all. No, I'm not writing this from some exotic location where they speak Spanish. It might be nice to be vacationing in Madrid or Rio, but about the closest I usually get to such a place is eating lunch at Frontera.

Tease photo

TONY ELDER: Put your requests on hold: take a few moments to thank God

Recently, a road maintenance crew came through the stretch of state highway in front of our church. I have to say they did one of the most thorough jobs of clearing off the right of way that I've witnessed in the 19 years we've been in that location.

TONY ELDER: God's timing is always in our best interest

Sometimes timing can make all the difference. And often that factor is the very thing that is beyond our control. I was reminded of that truth when I heard about the fiery multi-vehicle accident that took place last Sunday on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Fla. Early reports were that at least 10 people lost their lives.

TONY ELDER: God uses difficulties to bring good things into your life

"It could be worse," so I was told recently by the young man from the clean-up service that was sent out to our church by the insurance company. His comment came over the noise of commercial fans and dehumidifiers which were working tirelessly to try to erase the effects of an incident with the plumbing that had left our building virtually flooded.

TONY ELDER: What would Jesus want for Christmas?

One of the local nursing homes has a Christmas tree in its lobby. I understand that there were some tags hanging on that tree, each one listing the name of a resident along with one gift that person would like to receive. Family, friends, or other visitors could pick one of those names and bring that gift for the appropriate person.

TONY ELDER: Don't let the bright lights of Christmas outshine the light of Christ

One of my daughters and her family has adorned the outside of their house and front yard with a varied assortment of brightly lit Christmas decorations. It's not one of these homes that exhibits so many lights that it almost forces you to wear sunglasses as you drive by.But they do have enough of an array of holiday illumination to garner the attention of passersby, hopefully bringing joy and excitement to some children's hearts as they point and say, "Ooh, look at those Christmas lights!"

TONY ELDER: Don't doze through an opportunity to share God's Word with others

I don't know about you, but I'm still having problems adjusting to the recent time change. It's affecting me at both ends of the day. I'm waking up an hour sooner than necessary each morning. And due to the earlier onset of darkness, I find myself getting sleepy before my

I don't know about you, but I'm still having problems adjusting to the recent time change. It's affecting me at both ends of the day. I'm waking up an hour sooner than necessary each morning. And due to the earlier onset of darkness, I find myself getting sleepy before my usual bedtime at night.

TONY ELDER: Uphold the traditional values that keep families strong

Every so often my mom's birthday will fall on Thanksgiving, as is the case this year. When that happens, it always serves as a good reminder that one of the biggest blessings for which I have to be grateful is our family. It's not just my mother, but my dad, my sister and her husband, my wife, our children and grandchildren, and yes, even my in-laws.

Tease photo

TONY ELDER: Strive to be an ambassador for Christ: enlighten others about God

Recently, I saw the premiere of a new TV show with an interesting premise. It is set in a modern town where all the residents are actually characters from a storybook. They were put under a curse by an evil queen and were relegated to an existence in which there

Tease photo

TONY ELDER: Are we reflecting God's glory to the rest of creation?

For my birthday my wife gave me a choice of presents. She said that I could either choose the practical gift of a new suit or something more pleasurable. Although I tend to be a practical person, on this occasion I selected the pleasurable option. Therefore, one day last week

TONY ELDER: Reach a high standard of holiness with help from God

At our recent church picnic a game of horseshoes was being set up. You can tell that some of us are getting older when we prefer the competition of tossing horseshoes at a stake over running around playing a game of baseball or kickball, as was common in past years

TONY ELDER: Praying for others does make a difference
