Amanda Angulo, Kristen Bagwell and Bo Holder have been named Top 3 finalists for Newton County School System’s Teacher of the Year. The three educators were selected from among the Teachers of the Year at each of the school system’s 23 schools. The teachers submitted essays and then a panel of judges spent two days interviewing each of the teachers and selected the Top 3. The identities of the top three candidates were kept secret – even from their principals – until the teachers’ families, superintendent and other NCSS officials walked into classrooms Friday morning with the news and presented the teachers with balloons and flowers. The 2016 Teacher of the Year will be announced at a special ceremony at Newton High School at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. Celebrating life | PHOTOS

The Fall Festival and Health Fair held at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in south Rockdale County has grown in popularity, and this year’s event promises to be just as exciting. When the festival began five years ago, it drew about 2,000 people. Last year, that number swelled to about 4,500. The festival and health fair, featuring handmade arts and crafts, as well as the variety of children’s activities, along with free health screenings, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the monastery campus at 2625 Ga. Highway 212. Health screenings will be limited to the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here are some pictures of previous years’ fall festivals at the monastery.

Farm Bureau brings the farm to Flint Hill Elementary School

Students at Flint Hill Elementary School got some hands-on experience Friday about agriculture, livestock and farming. While they could not go to a farm themselves, the Farm Bureau took the farm to Flint Hill Elementary School. Students were in awe as they learned about beekeeping, met a couple cows, discovered what products Georgia produces most, and even pet some baby chicks.
