Renee Griffin, the wife of former Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputy Joseph R. Griffin who was killed in 2012 while providing law enforcement training in Afghanistan, accepts the Purple Star Award from Mel Booker with DynCorp International. Renee Griffin received the Purple Star Award on behalf of her husband during the NCSO 5th annual awards ceremony. Joseph Griffin began working with the Sheriff’s Office 1996, and in 2000 he joined DynCorp International and later became certified as an international police instructor. He trained law enforcement personnel around the world, including in Kosovo, Liberia, Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Lithonia) was also on hand and announced that he would enter a resolution in Congress naming Griffin as a U.S. Citizen of Distinction. (Staff photo: Aimee Jones)
