Jessica McKee, a volunteer with Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort (AWARE), shows off Koko, a red-tail hawk that was rescued after suffering secondary toxicity from eating a poisoned rat, during last year’s fall festival sponsored by the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. The hawk could not be completely rehabilitated and therefore cannot be released into the wild and is permanently housed at the organization’s shelter on Klondike Road in Lithonia. AWARE is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization primarily composed of volunteers and will once again participate in the Annual Fall Festival and Health Fair on Oct. 5. For more about the event, please see Friday’s Citizen. (Special photo: Lee Depkin)
