Four Rockdale County high school student-athletes have been named recipients of the Aubrae Gunderson Memorial Scholarship for 2013. In order to be eligible to receive the scholarship, student-athletes must be nominated by a coach or band director based on subjective leadership and team qualities, must letter in two varsity sports or one sport and marching band, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. This is the first year that the scholarships have been given awarded to students at all three of the county's high schools. This year's winners are Sydney Borg, Heritage High School; Harrison Kulp, Heritage High School; Kyia Havens, Rockdale County High School; and Kendra Jenkins, Salem High School. The scholarships have been offered every year since 2006 and are named in memory of Heritage High School student Aubrae Gunderson, who was struck and killed by a car in September 2005 while training with the Heritage cross country team. The scholarships were initially offered exclusively to HHS students, but due to community support and the fund's success, the field was expanded to include student-athletes from Rockdale and Salem in 2010. Shown here, left to right, are Dan Gunderson, father of Aubrae; award recipients Kyia Havens; Sydney Borg; Harrison Kulp; Kendra Jenkins; and Eileen Gunderson, mother of Aubrae. -- Special Photo
