:Fannie Alston uses tinted charcoal to draw a portrait of her husband Louis. Alston came to the class six years ago without any experience. Smith had her draw a knight and a horse upside down. He said he employes techniques like that to shut down the analytical, left side of the brain and help students focus on being present and just drawing the shapes in front of them. The upside down technique works because the brain is able to give up notions of what the drawing is supposed to look like as well as judgments about whether they can recreate it, he said. The art class is held every Wednesday from 10 a.m.-noon at Newton County Senior Services at Turner Lake Complex. Classes have been suspended for July but will resume in August. Students must be members of the Senior Center.
