Oxford College students spent the weekend helping out in the community garden at the Community Food Pantry in Covington in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. The Oxford community will continue a celebration of King at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Old Church with a special guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr. He is Distinguished Senior Scholar-in-Residence at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. A longtime civil-rights activist, he co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960. He earned degrees from the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tenn., and Harvard University. He has served on the faculties of Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta and Alabama State University in Montgomery, where he was Dean of the Graduate School; he also was principal of Tuskegee Institute High School in Tuskegee, Ala., and a teaching fellow at Harvard University.
