The gym, completed in 1938, will initially be used as an open-air event space. The building burned in 2005 and city officials and residents have sought to restore it ever since. It is hoped the building will eventually be roofed but initial estimates came back as high as $2 million, so officials opted for an open-air design. The gym was the centerpiece of the town in its heyday, a hub of recreational and social activities.
