Customers at the Salem Road Walmart store were interested in finding out about the Newton County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit during a fundraising event held there Saturday. Here, Deputy Christopher Bowles and Elvis make friends with a group of shoppers. Together with a simultaneous event held at the Kroger store on Ga. 20, more than $1,600 was raised for the unit. Proceeds will be used to purchase need equipment for the dogs and their handlers. "K9s are one of the most effective and diverse tools used in law enforcement. Dogs have a keen sense of smell and hearing, making them a valuable partner to our deputies as well as the community," said NCSO Public Information Office Cortney Morrison. "Their keen sense of smell allows them to locate a suspect or lost individual with ease. They save time for our deputies, reduce the number of deputies needed for a search, perform more thorough searches and keep out officers as well as the community safe during the apprehension of dangerous criminals." - Special photo
