Lighting on the downtown Square is getting an update. Here, Jeff Lindsey with the city's electric department works on a Victorian street lamp. The city's electric department is repainting and repairing existing poles and replacing old high-pressure sodium fixtures that give a yellow-gold light with new metal halide fixtures "that many merchants regard as much more pleasing," Utilities Director Bill Meecham said. "This project coordinates with the construction of the new tree wells and relocation of trees away from the lights, which had become a problem due to the trees blocking the light from some of the previous fixtures," Meecham said. The cost of the fixtures was $31,717.
