Porterdale Mayor Arline Chapman places free library books at a Little Free Library at Pine Street Park. Patrons are encouraged to take a book and leave a book. Little Free Libraries were first conceived by two Wisconsin men who set out to break Andrew Carnegie’s record of creating more than 2,500 libraries. They have enlisted the help of book lovers and artists in neighborhood across the country. This Little Free Library was painted by Jackie Kelly of Southern Heartland Art Gallery. A second Porterdale Little Free Library is located at the intersection of N. Broad and Palmetto streets and was painted by Chapman who included portraits of her two cats, Panda and Spunky. Chapman said someone commented that they liked the “bird feeder,” but she explained, “That’s not a bird feeder. That’s a brain feeder.” Plans are for a total of six Little Free Libraries to be located in Porterdale. “This allows us to bring the books to the people,” Chapman said. - Staff photos by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith
