Marines raise the American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. The historic photograph was taken on Feb. 23, 1945 by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. Gerald Hipps, who lives near Mansfield was among the Marines on the mountain top that day.
