RCSO: 2 Newton Co. men charged with armed robbery, murder

CONYERS — Two Newton County men have been arrested in Rockdale County in connection with a shooting Sunday that left a Covington man dead.

Deputies with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on the 2600 block of Country Trace around 11 p.m. Sunday.

“Upon arrival, deputies found Alexander Derrick Hunter, age 21 of Covington, deceased from the shooting. Investigators have since determined that the incident occurred during a clandestine meeting concerning a weapon purchase,” said Cpl. Michael Camp in a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

One suspect, Christian Elijah Evans, 20, of 180 Lassiter Drive, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. Monday, and charged with being party to the crime of murder and armed robbery. The second suspect, Kahleil Barton-Smith, 21, of 113 Greenleaf Road, Conyers, was taken into custody just after 5 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office reported. He has been charged with murder and armed robbery.

Both men are being held in the Rockdale County Jail without bond.
