COVINGTON — Motorists headed west on Interstate 20 in Newton County should expect delays as work continues on the bridge over the Alcovy River.
According to the state Department of Transportation, bridge rehab work will be underway from noon on Sunday, May 18, to 8 a.m. Thursday, May 22. Cissy McNure with the DOT said that work crews adhere to time restrictions that free up the roadway during peak weekend travel times.
The $6.7 million contract calls for replacement of the bridge decking rather than replacing the bridge, McNure said. The work is expected to be completed by June 30, depending on the weather.
While the project is underway, one lane of the interstate will be closed between mile markers 92 and 95 as construction crews demolish the existing bridge decking and set precast panels in place.
Flagmen may be used for this project. Motorists are asked to use caution, reduce speed and be alert to changing traffic conditions.
More information on the project is available on the DOT website at www.dot.ga.gov.
