Woman charged in machete incident

COVINGTON — A Newton County woman has been arrested after she allegedly struck another woman with a machete.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Carline Sandra Duffus, 43, confronted the victim around 7 p.m. Thursday outside the Texaco at 3633 Salem Road and accused her of stealing jewelry from her shop inside the flea market.

“The females began to argue and at some point Duffus retrieved a machete from a truck belonging to her husband and slapped the victim on the back of the legs,” said NCSO Sgt. Michael Cunningham.

The assault allegedly occurred in the presence of the victim’s young children and reportedly caused visible injuries to the victim’s legs.

Cunningham said Duffus of 10 Browning Drive, was arrested without incident and charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
