Gunshot victim ID'd in shootout

COVINGTON — The man killed during a shootout last week has been identified.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis said Covington resident Ashshakur Armstrong, 21, was pronounced dead at Rockdale Medical Center in Conyers.

“The cause of death was gunshot wounds, and homicide was the manner of death,” Davis said.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting that occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the area of Creek Way. Few details have been released, but authorities said that Armstrong and at least two other individuals arrived at a home on Creek Way and confronted the homeowner.

“Sometime during the confrontation, the deceased produced a pistol. At that time the homeowner drew his own weapon and gunshots were exchanged,” NCSO Investigator Jeff Alexander said last week.

Armstrong was struck at least one time and made his way across the street, which is where he was found when deputies arrived at the scene.

Armstrong was transported to RMC and was later pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

This case is still under investigation.
