The Rockdale Striders youth track and field team will be heading East this weekend.
Nine members of the team will participate in 15 combined events at the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association Class A Hershey state track meet at Westside High School Stadium in Augusta starting Friday.
The athletes finished in the top three in their respective events at the Georgia Parks and Recreation District 6 Class A meet at Stockbridge High School in late-April.
The group from Conyers will be led by 13-year olds De’Marshae Travis, who at Stockbridge won the 100-meters and 200-meters and finished second in the softball throw; Reece Burton, who won the long jump and finished as runner-up in the 1600-meters and 800-meters; and District 6 high jump champion Patrick Murray, who also placed third in the 1600, two spots back of Burton.
Six members of the Striders will compete in one event with 12-year old long jump champion Aliyah Williams leading the way. Also competing will be 13-year old Corinne Williams and Younger Burton (nine-years old), who were both runners-up in the softball throw; Cynia Hines (9), second-place finisher in the long jump and third-place long jump finishers Quincy Smith (11) and Olivia Pillay (11).
The Striders, who are coached by B.J. Kennedy, will compete in the state meet through Saturday.
Gates at Westside open Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Admission is $2 for adults and free for children ages six and under.
