The Eastside girls golf cleared another hurdle on their way to the Class AAAA state tournament having finished third with a team score of 302 in the Class AAAA sectional at Bull Creek Golf Course-East in Columbus on Monday.
The team improved from their Region 8-AAAA score of 303 which qualified them for the sectional with their runnerup finish.
Three of the four players improved from their region scores with Brittany Medlin showing the most improvement. Medlin shot a 110 at region dropping nine shots at sectional for 101.
Scoring for the Eastside girls with Medlin were Autumn Whiten with a 93 and Taylor Maddox who had a 108. Even though Alexis Allen’s score of 117 did not count at sectional, her 94 at the region tournament helped advance the team.
“It has been a true team effort getting to the state tournament,” Eastside girls coach Judy Smith said. “Every golfer has been a legitimate contributor. They have challenged and encouraged one another and worked hard toward this goal. I am proud of my girls.”
Whiten’s 93 had her in the top 10 for individual scoring with Burke County’s Rylie Marchman shooting the low round with a 75.
Only two scores from the boys AAAA sectional, held at Bull Creek Golf Course-West, was lower than Marchman’s. Posting a lower score than her 75 were Dutchtown’s Fisk Steven, who had a 68, and Richmond Academy’s Michael Cheesborough who shot a 73.
Other teams making it out of the AAAA sectional include Burke County (277), Wayne County (288), Perry (304), Stephens County (304), Statesboro (310), Johnson, Gainesville (320) and Mary Persons (322).
The Class AAAA state tournament will be held on Monday, May 19, at Waynesboro Country Club.
