Hill wins two state titles, Hubbard one in state track and field

Candace Hill wasn’t satisified with just one track and field state championship, the Rockdale freshman picked up a pair Saturday. Hill captured the state crown in both the 100 meters and 200 meters at the Class AAAAAA state meet at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Hill ran the 100 in 11.44, which set a Class AAAAAA meet record (Chalondra Goodman of Newnan had the old low time of 11.45). The freshman sensation completed her memorable day in the 200 where she ran in 23.21, an all-classification record. Her performances helped Rockdale tie Wheeler for seventh in the team standings.

Hill wasn’t the only local athlete to stand atop the podium in Albany.

Heritage sprinter Morgan Hubbard successfully defended her 300-hurdle state championship and bettered her 2013 time of 43.84, winning the event with a run of 42.94. Hubbard’s performance helped the Patriots tie Sequoyah for 15th.

In Class AAAA, Eastside finished 10th and had a pair of runner-up finishes as Breanna Thornton was second in the triple jump (36-04.25) and Nylah Chavis placed second in the high jump (5-04).
