Police arrest armed man loitering around school

CONYERS — Conyers police have arrested an armed man who was seen loitering early Wednesday morning around Pine Street Elementary School.

According to Conyers Police Department Officer Kim Lucas, the man was seen around 7:30 a.m. loitering in the area around the Dumpsters at the school.

“A teacher and the principal asked him what he was doing and he said he was just loafing around, and then he started talking about storm damage,” Lucas said, adding that the school employees thought he may have been carrying a weapon.

The school administrators contacted the CPD, but by the time officers arrived, the suspicious man had left the area.

Police began speaking with residents and business owners in the area to try to determine the identity of the man.

Lucas said women from the Rockdale House for Women on Milstead Avenue recognized the suspect as being a man named, “Tim,” and provided a partial tag on his vehicle.

“Officers were able to determine the correct tag information, which returned to a Timothy Alan Wells at 1202 Cardinal Road,” she said. “It was determined that Wells had a handgun in his possession while on Pine Street Elementary’s property Wednesday morning.”

Wells, 53, was arrested Thursday and charged with carrying a weapon within a school safety zone.
