CONYERS — The Conyers Kennel Club is offering an opportunity for area dog-lovers to show off their pets during an AKC Sanctioned B Match Saturday, April 5, at Earl O’Neal Sports Complex.
The event starts at noon with Junior Judging for contestants age 8 to 18, followed by conformation and obedience judging for all other entrants immediately afterwards. Those who would like to participate in the event should arrive earlier in order to register.
Jerri Dandelske, co-chair for the event, said conformation and obedience classes will also be offered, and owners and dogs who have been working to get their obedience titles will be able to take their obedience testing at the event.
Dandelske said the Conyers Kennel Club has been working to develop greater interest in showing dogs, particularly with members of 4-H Clubs in Rockdale County.
“Breeders like to work with juniors to bring them into the world of animals responsibly,” she said. “We are working really hard with the 4-H to get them more involved.”
Dandelske said breeders sometimes will provide a retired show dog, who knows the ropes, to work with juniors who are just getting involved in the show dog world.
“It’s a working partnership,” she said.
Saturday’s event will be family-friendly, Dandelske said, and spectators are welcome. Refreshments will be offered, and donations of pet food and or money for the Rockdale Food Bank are welcomed.
Entry fees for contestants are $8 on the day of the match. Entries will be accepted until 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
Ribbons will be awarded for all placements. Rosettes and trophies will be presented for Best Puppy, Best Adult, Highest Obedience Score and Best Junior.
The competition will take place on the soccer field at the Earl O’Neal Sports Complex located at 2709 Old Covington Road, N.E., Conyers.
