Alonzo Allen can now add “All-American” to his wrestling resume.
The Rockdale senior finished third at the NHSCA Senior Nationals in Virginia Bech, Virginia, defeating Drew Turner of North Carolina 3-2 in the third-place match of the 113-pound weight class.
Allen had already clinched All-American status (top 8 in each weight class) when he reached the semifinals of the tournament. John Twomey of New York nipped Allen 4-3 Saturday evening, but the state champion from Rockdale bounced back with a 5-1 win over Maryland’s Michael Beck before getting past Turner for third.
The finish at nationals caps a brilliant high school career for Allen. He finished his freshman and sophomore seasons as a state runner-up before winning state championships in his junior and senior seasons, including an 11-4 victory over Chattahoochee’s Jordan Pitt in the state final in February.
“He’s definitely going to go down as one of the best that’s come through Rockdale, he’s left his mark in Rockdale wrestling history,” said Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove. “There probably won’t be one that comes through like him, those (type of) kids are special. Great talent, comes from a great family…he’s put all that together. It’s been fun to watch.”
