Rockdale swept the NewRock track and field meet this past week, winning both the boys and girls events with ease at Salem High School.
Rockdale won 17 events overall and five athletes won a pair of events, led by dual-100 and 200-meter winners Candace Hill (11.77 in the 100, 24.02 in the 200) and Lawrence Crawford (10.63 in the 100, 21.87 in the 200). Also winning multiple titles for the Bulldogs were Malik Dawkins (49.79 in the 400-meters and 2:03.02 in the 800-meters); Dax Willette in the 1600-meters (4:43.18) and 3200-meters (10:15.73); and Jhibri Greer in the 110-hurdles (14.56) and 300-hurdles (40.68).
The girls’ 400-relay (48.45) and 1600-relay (2:06.16) finished first, along with the boys’ 400-relay at 42.12. Also winning titles for Rockdale were Robert McCray in the shot put (52-01); Antwonette Thomas in the 800-meters (2:29.81), Keke Lewis in the 1600-meters (5:58.49) and Taylor Wilkins in the shot put (33-06.50).
Morgan Hubbard won both the 100-hurdles at 15.09 and the 300-hurdles (45.46) to lead the Heritage girls to a second-place finish. Also picking up first-place medals for the Patriots were Ferree Buck in the 3200-meters (13:20.99); Mia McLean in the long jump (17-00) and Nia Woolford in the discus throw (89-01.50).
The Newton boys finished second, thanks to Mailk Franklin, who won the long jump (22-07) and triple jump (47-00), and the title-winning 1600-relay team (3:22.10). Brianna Hayden won the triple jump (36-01) to pace the Newton girls.
Eastside had the high jump champion in the girls event (Nylah Chavis at 5-06 and boys event (Daniel Oduah at 6-08), and Breanna Thornton was also the titleist in the 400-meters (59.18). Salem got an individual title from Quintis Maddox, who won the discus throw at 154-11.
