Porterdale police arrest 11 at known drug house

PORTERDALE — Eleven people were arrested and charged with drug use at a Porterdale home recently where police have repeatedly been called for drug activity.

After receiving an anonymous tip that a group of people was again using drugs at the home at 15 Elm St., the Porterdale Police Department and the Newton County Crime Suppression Unit teamed up on March 14 to confront the occupants of the home, according to a report from the Porterdale Police Department. PPD Officer Kevin Courchaine stated in the report that the Porterdale Police Department had been dispatched to this home 26 times in less than one year and had made multiple arrests.

Sometime around 7:45 p.m. on March 14, officers and deputies approached the home to ask the homeowner and other occupants about the complaints of drug use, using a police technique called “knock and talk.”

Courchaine reported that when he approached the back door, he saw several people sitting on the back porch.

“When those subjects saw us approaching, I heard someone yell, ‘police’ and they all fled into the residence,” Courchaine stated in the report.

The officer then approached the homeowner and was given permission to search the home for drugs. As he searched inside a bedroom, he found behind a dresser a small plastic bag with devils printed on one side that contained a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine. Courchaine also found another small clear bag under the bed that contained suspected methamphetamine

One man, Cory Mitcham, had a small amount of marijuana in his jacket pocket.

Officers also located drug-related objects in the house, such as a broken glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and a marijuana grinder with green leafy residue.

“Everyone we spoke with denied any knowledge of any drugs in the residence,” Courchaine reported. “We explained that if someone did not take ownership of the drugs, then we would arrest everyone in the residence for possession of Schedule II drugs (meth).”

One man in the home, Joshua McBee, said that one of the bags of methamphetamine belonged to him.

“Everyone started yelling at Milton Forkey to take ownership of the methamphetamine,” the report states. “At this time, (PPD) Lt. (Jason) Cripps stated to everyone that it was over and everyone was going to be charged. At this time, Mr. Milton Forkey stated that it was his. I explained to Mr. Forkey that it was too late because he could state in court that he claimed the drugs under intimidation and threats.”

All the individuals in the home were arrested and transported to the Newton County Detention Center. They are as follows:
