Eagles get win behind Buckhault’s arm

COVINGTON — Eastside pitcher Drew Buckhault quieted the Chestatee bats keeping the Eagles perfect in Region 8-AAAA with their 5-0 win at Armed Services Appreciation Day on Monday.

“It was an honor to have our military veterans at the game and we thank them for celebrating Military Appreciation Night with us,” Eastside head coach Jon Ayers said.

Buckhault pitched a complete seven innings striking out eight batters while giving up one hit and two walks.

After retiring the first three batters, the Eagles gave Buckhault a slight cushion when Austin Holloway scored on a Chase Raines RBI hit.

Eastside made it 2-0 in the third inning with Raines getting the RBI after Josh Sims reached the bases on an error.

Buckhault continued to give Chestatee trouble from the mound over the next three innings taking down their lineup in order other than a walk in the fourth inning.

The Eastside offense added another insurance run in the fifth when Holloway’s third single of the game plated Jared Jones. The Eagles extended their lead in the sixth with Raines reaching on error and Buckhault helping his own cause with a strong single up the middle. A single from freshman Austin Kerbow plated Raines and was followed by a suicide squeeze that brought courtesy runner Jacob Wilder home for the fifth run of the game.

Buckhault took the mound in the seventh to close out the game finding himself with a bases loaded situation with nobody out because of a pair of errors and a hit batsman. A double-play and a strike out ended the threat securing the shutout win.

“We continue to pitch and play defense well and we executed well offensively,” Ayers said.

Eastside will also face Lanier, who is also without a loss in region play, in a two game series playing the Longhorns on the road today before playing them again at Eagles Field on Friday.
