The Rockdale tennis teams had another impressive showing at last weekend’s Viking Invitational. Both the girls, who played at the Harry B. Anderson Tennis Center, and boys, who played at Valdosta State University, each finished as runner-up, losing to Norcross in the finals of both brackets.
No. 1 singles players Summer Walker and Patrick Sanders each went 3-0 over the weekend and picked up the only victories for Rockdale in the title matches as Norcross picked up dual 4-1 victories.
To get to the championship matches, the Rockdale girls secured 4-1 victories over both Colquitt County and Lowndes and the boys outlasted Tift County and Lowndes by identical 3-2 scores.
Rockdale, which was coming off 5-0 victories over Druid Hills earlier in the week to stay unbeaten in three Region 2-AAAAAA matches, had strong singles play all weekend as several players finished the tournament with 2-1 records. Trey Hull and Logan Hull won two of three matches for the boys, while Destiny Commodore and McKenna Comiskey did likewise for the girls team. The No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Tiara Anthony also went 2-1.
“Our singles played really good all weekend,” said Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing. “This was some of the most competitive, evenly-matched tennis that we have played in a couple years. Every match was a battle, and all the players really showed their fortitude. Several times we lost the first set, but we came back, forced a third set and won in the third.”
Rockdale returns to the court Wednesday when Lakeside-DeKalb visits for a non-region match.
