COVINGTON — Speaking in front of a crowd can be intimidating, which is why Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus is offering public speaking workshops to the community on improving oratorical skills.
GPC communications professors Linda Bowen and Jane Hercules, along with business law professor Leila Lawlor, will host the free courses from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on March 18. Another public speaking workshop will be held on April 15 at the same time.
“Anyone who wants extra exposure or experience with public speaking or job interviews is welcome. They can come to seminars, and we can help them on an individual basis,” said Hercules.
The workshops, which have been named “Present with Power,” will provide a non-threatening atmosphere where feedback and instruction will be provided to encourage individuals to present themselves in a professional manner, according to a press release from GPC.
“’Present with Power’ was conceived to be a free service to the community and the college,” said Bowen. “Stage fright is prevalent in a large portion of the population, both for job-seekers and for presenters. Skills training can alleviate some of the anxiety associated with the job interview and presentation process. With proper preparation, you can increase your chances of landing your dream job and increase effectiveness of confident public speaking.”
Those interested in attending can either make an appointment or simply stop by room 2 N 2230 on the days of the workshops. The GPC Newton Campus is located at 239 Cedar Lane, Covington.
