A pair of former Newton basketball standouts, Shane Henry and Jamon Hawkins, have had quite a winter.
Henry, a Georgia Perimeter College sophomore, was recently named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association defensive player of the year, polishing off an outstanding season. Henry, a 6-8 forward, led the conference in blocked shots, averaging 4.7, and rebounding (12.2), including 225 defensive rebounds. The former Ram also contributed a team-high 13.2 points and was second on the team in shooting (51.3 percent).
GPC finished the year 16-14.
Hawkins was a big reason why Georgia Southwestern will play in the Southeast Regional of the Division II mens basketball tournament this weekend. In 29 games, Hawkins, a senior guard from Newton, is fourth on the team in scoring (11.7 points). The Hurricanes (20-10), a No. 6 seed, will play No. 3 seed Montevallo today at 12 pm at USC Aiken with the winner matched up with the survivor of the 2:30 p.m. No. 2 Lincoln Memorial-No. 7 Carson-Newman game.
The winners of the quarterfinal games, which include top seed and host USC Aiken against No. 8 Limestone at 5 pm and fourth-seeded Anderson against No. 5 Georgia Regents-Augusta at 7:30 p.m., will play in Sunday’s semifinals starting at 5 p.m.
The regional final is scheduled for March 18 at 7 pm.
