Decatur man charged with stealing, entering autos

CONYERS — The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man suspected of stealing a car and then attempting to break into another one.

Sometime around 3 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a theft in progress call on Thorn Apple Court in Irwin Place subdivision when a witness saw someone breaking into their neighbor’s vehicle.

Deputies searching the area discovered a car that had been reported stolen. While they were unable to immediately find the suspect, several deputies remained in the area anticipating he would return to where the stolen car was found, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A few hours later, deputies saw the suspect, Yusuf Abdul Kareem Nelson, 23, of Decatur, walking in the street and he was taken into custody. Nelson was transported to the Rockdale County Jail and is facing charges of entering automobile and theft by receiving stolen property.

Nelson is believed to have been hiding behind or underneath a house in the area and may have left some of his belongings. If anyone finds a dark jacket, set of keys or any other items, they are asked to contact Lt. Mike Dougherty at 770-278-8152.

In related news, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for the suspect or suspects responsible for breaking into numerous cars in the Mission Ridge subdivision off Old Salem Road late last week. It appeared that all of the vehicles were locked, but the locks were popped by one or multiple tools used by the suspect or suspects, the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Deputies were called to three houses on Friday, March 7, where residents reported someone had broken into their vehicles and stolen various items.

In one case, the victim saw the driver’s side window seal was damaged and he was missing a bookbag and a pack of cigarettes. The man’s college books were on the ground.

In another instance, the victim reported the DVD/CD player in the dash of his car was removed, along with the headrests that had DVD players in them. A handgun was also stolen.

At another home, two cars were broken into, although it appeared at the time that nothing had been stolen.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the RCSO. A cash reward is available for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect or suspects involved.
