CONYERS — The suspect who is believed to have been shot Friday morning in an exchange of gunfire with a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputy after deputies chased the man into DeKalb County following a violent carjacking is in custody.
According to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, a 16-year-old juvenile has been identified as the armed robbery and carjacking suspect that was chased and shot Friday morning by an RCSO deputy. The juvenile was apprehended Friday evening with the assistance with the DeKalb County Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.
RCSO Investigator Michael Camp said the juvenile is in custody at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Based on information released Friday night, three suspects are believed to have been involved in the incident, although only the juvenile was in the vehicle when a chase ensued with deputies earlier that day.
The Sheriff’s Office has issued a lookout for 23-year-old Deonte Douglas Huddleston, whose last known address was in Covington, who is considered to be a person of interest in the armed robbery.
The suspects are believed to have been involved in an armed robbery at a residence on Golfview Terrace off Salem Road around 10 a.m. Friday that turned into a carjacking when the victim was pistol-whipped and the suspect - or suspects - then stole his tan Lincoln Town Car.
RCSO Investigator Michael Camp said deputies who were posted along I-20 saw the suspect vehicle heading westbound near Sigman Road.
“When they pulled behind the vehicle, the suspect took off and a chase ensued between our deputies and the suspect,” Camp said.
The driver then pulled off at the Evans Mill Road exit and drove to an apartment complex off Hillandale Road, near DeKalb Medical Center.
“The suspect pulled into the complex and drove about halfway down the parking lot. He then got out of his car with a gun,” Camp said. “The deputy exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Our deputy was not shot, but at this time, we believe the suspect may have been shot.”
After the shooting, the suspect then dropped his handgun, ran and jumped over a fence.
Deputies with the RCSO, DeKalb County Police Department officers, K-9 units and Air 90 patrols searched for the man, and locked down a nearby high school for some time Friday afternoon. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
After reporting that the 16-year-old was arrested, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office said that investigators are continuing to follow up on leads and more details will be released as they become available.
