COVINGTON — Eastside’s boys golf team started its season on a low note, losing to Brookwood 181-170 in a nine-hole match at Ashton Hills Golf Club on Monday.
Eastside’s No. 1 golfer, Quinn Murphy, paced the team with a 40. Murphy had a couple of chances to post a lower score but his approach shot was just off its mark.
Murphy came close to putting his ball in the hole on the fly but his ball was less than an inch to the right of the hole. The Eastside senior was able to come back and get his putt to start the match with a birdie.
Two holes was the difference in Eastside’s No. 2 golfer, Jack Mitchell, who posted a low score rather than the fourth highest score with a 48. What looked like a solid approach on the par-three turned into a seven because of two bad shots.
Eastside’s other scorers, Matt Mitchell and Tyler Dysart, posted scores of 46 and 47. Playing but not scoring for Eastside were Ryan Dial (59) and Jed Parker (62).
All four Brookwood players had a solid match. Matt Fowler and Philip Westberry had their worst scores of 46 but both still better than Eastside posting scores.
Shawn Chong paced the team with a 40 followed by Blaine Ewing (41), Drew Hutchinson (44) and Jack Bleckley (45).
Eastside will try to improve on their scores as they travel to Monroe Country Club today in a match against Monroe Area.
