Rockdale starts region play with sweep over Newton

COVINGTON — Rockdale’s tennis team had their way with Newton to start region 2-AAAAAA play with a 5-0 sweep in both matches on Tuesday.

“We tried a couple of different combinations than what we’ve done in our other matches, but it’s always good to see how they respond,” Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing said. “Newton seems to have improved from last year so we had to play our best to do well. I’ve pleased with how we played. I can’t ask for much better in our first region game”

In the boys matches, Rockdale’s No. 1 singles player, Patrick Sanders, No. 3 singles Logan Hull and the No. 2 doubles team of Tyyon Anthony and Aaron Barron cruised through their matches, each winning 8-0.

Newton had their best chance of winning a game at No. 1 doubles as Demetrious Calhoun and Tamar Thomas won four sets against Abenet Addisu and Bruce Mitchell. However, it wasn’t enough as Rockdale took the match 8-4.

Also scoring against Rockdale was Newton’s Tufel Khan who lost to Trey Hull at No. 2 singles 8-1.

Rockdale’s Summer Walker, who is ranked as the No. 11 player in Georgia and 111th nationally by tennisrecruiting.net, kept Newton’s Brishanti Weaver from scoring as Walker got the 8-0 win. Also winning her match 8-0 was Destiny Commodore, who beat Irma Soriaro at No. 2 singles.

Alliyah Byrd kept the winning streak going at No. 3 singles with an 8-1 win over Ashley Jean Baptist.

The No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Tiara Anthony had an 8-2 win over Newton’s Hanah Scott and Iffy Egunlem before GG Manuel and McKenna Commiskey defeated Brooke Menchion and Jayleen Cole 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

No matter what combination Rockdale tried, they found success as Sansing switched his regular boys and girls No. 2 doubles team as well as the girls No. 3 singles player.

“I’ve been going back and forth but they all played well,” Sansing said. “The No. 2 double, McKenna and GG, this was the first time they’ve played together and I wanted to see how they looked. The did pretty good.”
