Rockdale’s tennis teams fared well last weekend at the 16-school Peachtree City Invitational, with the girls finishing as tournament runner-up and the boys placing third.
The girls defeated a pair of Coweta County schools in Newnan (3-2) and Northgate (3-2), then defeated Lambert High School’s B team (3-1) to reach the tournament final. The match with Newnan was tied at 2-2 before Rockdale’s No. 2 doubles team (Sydney Norton and GG Manuel) won the second set tiebreaker to give the Conyers school the first-round victory.
Roswell shut out Rockdale 4-0 in the championship, which included No. 1 singles player Summer Walker’s first loss in a high school match. The University of Connecticut signee lost to University of Georgia signee Laura Patterson, who is ranked as the No. 26 Class of 2014 prospect by tennisrecruiting.net. Walker is ranked No. 11 in the state of Georgia.
It was the first time any Rockdale team had advanced to the championship in the main bracket of the prestigious, early-season tournament.
The Rockdale boys won the consolation match against county rival Heritage, winning at No. 1 singles with Patrick Sanders, at No. 3 singles (Trey Hull) and with the No. 1 doubles team of Abenet Addisu and Bruce Mitchell. The Bulldogs lost to defending Class AAAAA state champion Starr’s Mill 4-1 in the first round of the tournament, though Sanders won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Rockdale bounced back in the consolation rounds with wins over Eagle’s Landing (4-1) and Allatoona, a state semifinalist last year, 3-2.
It was the second consolation title for the boys, who also won in 2012.
Sanders finished the weekend 4-0, while Hull, Walker and the girls No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Tiara Anthony each went 3-1.
