JROTC uniforms reported stolen

COVINGTON — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a report that several Marine Corps JROTC uniforms had been stolen from Newton High School.

Gunnery Sgt. Sherman Smith contacted the Sheriff’s Office Tuesday to report that about $3,000 of JROTC uniforms appeared to have been stolen at some point during the transfer from the old high school on Ram Drive to the new high school on Ram Way in May 2013.

“They moved into the new school on August 2013, but because of everything being packed away, he was not able to do inventory until recently,” the incident report states.

The uniforms had been packed away in the supply rooms in the ROTC area, the deputy reported, and Smith wanted to file a report so the matter could be investigated.

In other news, deputies continue to look into an allegation by a Newton County man that approximately $30,000 from his coin collection had been stolen.

The victim said 23 coins from his coin collection at his home were missing in an apparent burglary.
