Im tames Oaks Course shooting under par in Atlanta Junior Golf tournament

COVINGTON — The Oaks Course was the next stop of the Atlanta Junior Golf Summer Series Tournament schedule where the players competed on Tuesday.

The course brought some players to their knees while a few were able to walk away with the knowledge that they conquered the course.

“The kids love this golf course,” Oaks Course Director of Golf Dick Schulz said. “The golf course is in great shape. The staff has it looking good, we’ve had a ton of complements from parents. In general, it’s just an enjoyable golf course.”

One player which had the course bowing its head in respect was Sara Im. The 9-year old from Duluth had the only under-par score shooting a 2-under par 34 for nine holes.

Im started the par-four, first hole with a birdie. She went to two-under par with a birdie on the par-four, third hole before losing a stroke bogeying the next hole. Im stayed at one-under before getting back to two-under with a birdie on the par-four sixth.

“They (AJG) went out and set the length and the pin placement. It’s not a PGA event,” Schulz said. “They want the kids to show their skills but enjoy themselves.”

Conyers’ Brandon Cope and Reilly McCullough played well winning their age division for their nine-hole event. Cope won the 9-hole Club 13-over division shooting a three-over par 39 with McCullough winning the 9-hole Open 13-over division with a four-over par 40.

Winning the 18-hole Club Boys 13-14 age division was Nick Eller with a seven-over par 78.

Ryan Bilancini won the 18-hole Club Boys 15-18 division with a score of 88. Also playing the 18-hole Club Boys 15-18 division were Covington’s Austin Dockery (90) and Conyers’ John Sauer (95).

The top three golfers in the 18-hole Open Boys 15-18 were within a stroke of each other. But in the end Abraham Kim was able to hold off Jake Maples shooting a five-over par 76 with Maples shooting a 77. Drew McCullers came in third shooting a seven-over par 78.

Sydney Woody won the Club Girls 12-over division with a 94 with Bailey Hardy winning the 9-hole Club Girls 14-over shooting a 45 with Covington’s Sidney Roule shooting a 49.

The AJG series played at Cherokee Run on Monday with Covington’s Landon Farill posting the second lowest 18-hole score for the boys. Farill won his division in the 18-hole Open Boys 13-14 with a seven-over par, 79. Winning his division and posting the lowest score was Matthew Markham shooting a 78 in the 18-hole Open Boys 15-18.

While finishing second the Oaks Course on Tuesday, Dockery won his division at Cherokee Run shooting an 88.

Also winning their division for 18 holes were Matthew Giesler with an 88 (12-under), Keith Watkins with a 97 (Club Boys 13-14) and Kira Donaldson with a 97 (Club Girls 12-over).
