16s and 18s playing invitational baseball tournaments

Each June, the top travel baseball teams in the state convene for the Perfect Game baseball tournament series in Cobb County and surrounding areas, and this week plenty of local players are participating in the 16-under and 18-under East Cobb Invitationals.

The 16-under field includes the GBSA Whitesox (Decatur) and its four local players. Salem players Akil Baddoo and Jason Howell, Heritage’s Isreal Zackery and Newton’s Mason Calloway all joined the Whitesox as they continued pool play Friday against the Flying Tigers (Cumming). GBSA opened the tournament Thursday with a 6-1 victory over North Bulldogs, thanks in large part to Calloway, who tossed six innings of one-run ball to get the win, and Zackery, who drove in a pair of runs. GBSA plays Team Elite South Yankees today at 11:30 a.m. at Cass High School.

Team Georgia Baseball Academy (Marietta), which includes Heritage pitcher and infielder Matt Studdard and Rockdale pitcher Jeff Sweat, both rising juniors, started the tournament with a 9-1 win over Blue Collar Baseball before falling 8-7 to Predators Baseball.

Team Georgia will play Game Ready Athletics at 9 a.m. at the East Cobb Complex.

In the 18-under tournament, Heritage’s Austin New is playing for the East Cobb Renegades. The Renegades, based out of Marietta, split their first two tournament games - a 9-1 win over Team Avenue Aces and an 11-5 loss to North Alabama Vipers - and will close pool play today at 3 p.m. against the Team Georgia Baseball Academy 17-under Red at Perfect Game Park South in Cartersville.

Jalen Jackson, who recently graduated from Heritage, is a part of the GBSA Cardinals that dropped its first two games to Powermill 18-under and Coastal Georgia Baseball. The Cardinals, a team based out of Lithonia, take on Marquis Grissom Baseball tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Perfect Game Park South.

That Marquis Grissom Baseball team includes Newton graduate and Savannah State signee Kenny Glover and the Fayetteville-based team opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Coastal Georgia Basbeall. MGB played Powermill Friday.

Team Georgia 17-under Blue, which is coached by Heritage’s Jason Borcherding and includes recent Heritage graduate and Georgia Perimeter College signee Tyler Holcombe, won its first two games, 3-1 over Denny Pritchett Jayhawks and 5-1 over Tiger USA Baseball. Team Georgia plays BigStix Gamers at 3 p.m. at Perfect Game Park South.

After pool play concludes today, each tournament will hold its playoffs Sunday and Monday.
