Conyers VFW, auxiliary host breast cancer seminar

CONYERS — VFW Post 5290 and the VFW Auxiliary in Conyers have joined with Georgia Cancer Specialists to host a free informational seminar on breast cancer.

The public event is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1432 VFW Drive SW in Conyers.

Deborah Strickland, a member of the auxiliary, said the seminar is an effort to reach out to the community to provide information and education.

“I am a two-time breast cancer survivor, and since I was diagnosed and treated I have had to retire, so I am trying to find ways to pay back for my life,” Strickland said. “I am a lifetime member of the VFW, and I use that organization, along with my cancer doctors.”

Strickland said she wants to emphasize to women the importance of educating themselves about the disease.

“I went five years without a mammogram,” she said. “I was diagnosed at Stage 3; had I been diagnosed earlier, my outcome would have been different.”

Strickland said she hopes the seminar will help more women “know what they need to know and what to expect.”

Speakers for the seminar will include Dr. Sherine Thomas and Dr. Kathleen Lambert, who will provide educational information on the disease, help raise community awareness and answer questions from the audience.

There will be a raffle drawing for door prizes donated by local businesses, as well as appetizers, refreshments and other giveaways.

Other sponsors for the seminar are Therapeutic Solutions Inc. and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute.
