Former Indian Creek Middle School student drowns

ALBANY — A young teen formerly from Covington reportedly drowned earlier this month while swimming in a pool in Albany.

According to the Albany Herald newspaper, 13-year-old Zyhir Johnson was swimming at a pool in his neighborhood in Albany on Saturday, July 19, when he started to down. Johnson’s uncle, who was visiting from the Atlanta area, was at the scene and a neighbor who saw the drowning unfold also attempted to help. The boy was in 10 feet of water and efforts to save him were ultimately unsuccessful.

Sherri Davis-Viniard with the Newton County School System said Johnson was a student last year at Indian Creek Middle School.

She said the school will have counselors available when the school year begins Friday for any students who may need assistance.
