COVINGTON — A man wielding a sword was shot by a Covington Police officer Wednesday afternoon after the suspect allegedly charged at the officer with the weapon.

The Covington Police Department reported that officers responded around 12:30 p.m. to a call of a suspicious person in the area of Legion Drive. The suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Julian Leon Faulkner of 3155 Thompson Ave., was seen by witnesses carrying a large medieval-type sword, walking in and out of traffic along Legion Drive and in and out of residents’ yards, said Capt. Craig Treadwell during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Responding officers did not immediately see the suspect, so one of the officers turned down Brookwood Circle, where he saw the man, who was wearing blue jeans, a golf shirt and a baseball cap, walking in the woodline.

“The officer stepped out of his car, at which time the suspect raised his sword over his head and ran toward the officer,” Treadwell said, adding that the man was yelling incomprehensibly.

The officer then retreated behind his patrol car while telling the suspect to put down the sword as he drew his service weapon in defense.

Treadwell said Faulkner only became more agitated and raised the sword and charged at the officer. The officer fired one shot, striking the suspect.

Officers who had arrived at the scene provided Faulkner immediate medical attention until EMS and Covington Fire Department personnel arrived. Faulkner was then airlifted to Grady Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Treadwell said the suspect was in surgery Wednesday afternoon.

This investigation is being turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Treadwell said Faulkner will be arrested after he is released from the hospital and taken to the Newton County jail. The GBI will determine what charges to file against him, Treadwell said.

The police officer, whose identity has also not been released but who has been with the CPD for more than 10 years, will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
